I really enjoyed seeing many of you on Saturday for our Shorewood, WI Shop, Stop, and Restore. Our massage therapist, Kristie, was busy all day providing chair massages and Pamela, with Nevaeh Medispa gave microderm abrasion demos to numerous delighted women. Our gluten-free cookies that Jean lovingly prepared were a hit! And one lucky winner received a free acupuncture treatment.

Personally, though, after a year of stress and occasional (am I being honest?) bad eating, my liver and gallbladder were crying out for a break. I chose this week to do a juice fast (apple, grapefruit and the occasional carrot, beet, celery) followed by a full-on liver/gallbladder cleanse. You know, the one that has one drinking 8 oz of olive oil mixed with lemon or grapefruit juice. After years of doing this cleanse twice a year, I now had (I thought) successfully avoided it for a few years. I mean, I’m a naturopath. I know what to eat, what supplements to take. I’m an herbalist and I take all the right Chinese herbs for whatever condition I might be having. Right. Not so much.

My fears were unfounded. I sailed through the week of just juicing and pretty much sailed through the night of olive oil (well, there was a bit of discomfort)…and I now feel better than I have in at least a year or three. My energy is good. My sleep is great (it was NOT good). And I lost 7 pounds. Bonus. Holiday celebrating. Bring it on! (all in moderation). I feel like a new person. And I am. With a newly cleaned out liver and gall bladder.

I’ll be ready to do another liver cleanse in the spring. Anyone in the greater Milwaukee area with me?

One of the most common questions about acupuncture is: does it hurt? The answer in most cases is no! Usually not at all!!

Why? Because acupuncture needles are 25-50 times thinner than a hypodermic needle. They’re actually so thin that several acupuncture needles could fit inside a typical hypodermic needle. A typical acupuncture needle is so fine that most people feel nothing at all when a practitioner inserts one into the skin. When sensations do occur, they range from a mere tingle to a slight pinch, to mild heat, numbness, or traveling warmth.

Needles usually remain inserted for 20 to 40 minutes. Most people find the experience extremely relaxing and uplifting. Patients often fall asleep during the treatment session.

When treatment requires thicker gauge needles, a mild reaction of some kind is more likely to occur, such as a slight possibility of some soreness during or after a treatment. Let your acupuncturist know immediately whenever any discomfort occurs so he or she can take appropriate action.

If you’re especially sensitive to acupuncture or ‘needle-phobic’ your acupuncturist can use thinner needles and alternative techniques to minimize your concerns and reactions. Be sure to speak up and let your practitioner know how you’re feeling!

As with any patient-practitioner relationship, communication is an important part of the process.
